Metal detecting with the Minelab Safari on the wet sand beach today.

So today is boxing day and my Mrs had planned to hit the sales at the clothes shops which left me with a good opportunity to get out metal detecting. I really could not be bothered to go to any of my land based permissions today as lately  they have not been producing anything worthy of the time spent in the field.
So I decided that I would go down to the local beach with my Minelab Safari for the first time since buying it 6 months ago. Half the reason that I bought this metal detector was because I had heard such positive reviews about its ability to do the wet sand as well as it does the land and Bridlington beach would be the ultimate test and proving

My Minelab Safari metal detector review and best settings for ultimate depth of detection!

The mighty Minelab Safari metal detector

I have now been using the Minelab Safari for over 6 months and what an amazing 6 months of metal detecting it has been! Since switching to the safari from my old machine I have now found hammered  silver coins, rings and even a hoard of George iii shillings and sixpences whilst out metal detecting. To say that I am impressed with the Minelab Safari's abilities would be a complete understatement.

Personally I have always said and believed that as long as you learn your metal detector and what it is telling you and just as importantly walk

Which is the best metal detector to buy?!

Andy, which is the best metal detector to buy?

This is a question I get asked about over and over again on the comment sections of my YouTube videos. Who can blame potential newcomers to the hobby for being cautious about buying a new metal detector as there are so many different brands with loads of different models which all cater for different needs.
Unfortunately I cannot answer this question in the comment section of my videos as there is literally not enough writing space to be able to give them any decent advice. So instead I decided to make a quick video on my YouTube channel to voice my opinion on which is the best metal detector for a beginner to buy. I hope this helps others who stumble across it. If the video helps in any way, shape or form please give it a thumbs up and share among your buddies. Happy metal detecting alll.

A perfect day of metal detecting!

Hi all,
Today was the day that i got to try out my new detech ultimate coil on the safari. I bought this coil because a lot of my sites are pasture and the finds seem to be really deep and just generally

A look at some of the best coins I have found metal detecting.

I still have not managed to get out metal detecting since way back before our trip to Florida a few weeks back. The main reason being is that I stupidly managed to slice the tendons connecting in my little finger again which has really hampered all my plans. Bored and missing any

My new project for when metal detecting is not possible.

Hello everyone,
It has been a crazy few weeks without that much metal detecting. We took a holiday to Florida or Orlando to be more precise, to cut a long story short we had a great holiday with amazing food and amazing weather. We even survived a category 4 hurricane, unfortunately now though it is back to reality.
Reality, unfortunately now means darker nights and cold winter days are upon us which kinda cuts in to available metal detecting time. So while I will be doing less metal detecting I have decided

Loads more silver coins found with the metal detector from the hoard field!

Hey all,
So over the last few weekends I have been hammering the field on which I recently found the hoard/pocketspill of George iii silver shillings and sixpences. Since then I have found one more George iii sixpence and well over 20 more silver sixpences and shillings going right up to 1945 along

Silver jug and more silver coins found with the metal detector on the Hoard field.

More metal detecting action at the silver coin hoard field.

After finding my first ever hoard of silver coins on my detecting buddies land last weekend i was dying to get back down there to see if there was any more left. I knew that the only way to try to get to any that were deeper down in the soil was to crank the Minelab Safari up to full power and have the threshold a bit higher so that i could hear the fainter, deeper signals. This seemed to work a treat as i found two more

I have found a hoard of silver coins metal detecting! Treasure alert.

Hi all,
I have been a bit quiet over the last week or so and the reason for this is that i have met a local detectorist and his son and we have been doing some permission swapping. Last Saturday i was metal detecting on my friends land when I had an almighty signal which showed up very high on the id scale. Upon digging up the target i could not believe what i was seeing, a coin that i had been wanting to find for over five years. The coin in question is a George iii "bullhead" sixpence a coin that i first saw on the forums when i started taking up this amazing hobby.
Fast forward to this weekend, yesterday to be more exact. I had decided that i was going to take a low and slow approach with my metal detector around the area that i found the sixpence. Within ten minutes I had a shilling sized silver coin in my finds pouch that was unfortunately completely worn. I continued around 4 foot and got another belting signal just like the one from the sixpence, digging down revealed yet another immaculate sixpence! Within a two foot radius i managed to find a total of 5 sixpences and one shilling all dated 1816. Five years of wanting and then suddenly i have a hoard of them.

The metal detector used was my Minelab Safari set up in custom all metal mode with -10 and +40 notched out

I caught the whole lot on video which is below this post. I really hope you enjoy it as much as i did filming it.

Happy hunting.

First time out metal detecting in 5 months, new metal detector and an amazing medieval artefact!

Minelab Safari metal detector and possibly my favourite find ever....

So today was the day, my first metal detecting session in around five months and considering i used to be out every weekend day without fail this break has been a long one. Upon waking up the sky was overcast but there was no sign of rain just as the weather report said it would be like. I loaded up the car with the essentials, coat, metal detector, spade and pointer and i was away.

I went to the usual done to death pasture permission that mainly throws up military and modern crap not expecting to find much but as a chance to start bonding with the Safari. As soon as i got out the car the heavens opened and tried to give me a good drenching, luckily i brought sandwich bags to keep the detector dry!

Anyway the showers were short lived and i was soon basking in glorious sunshine wondering how i had managed to stay away from metal detecting for so long. The finds were pretty sparse today but i did manage a couple of coins, button and quite possibly my favourite find that i have has so far. The find in question is a medieval heraldic mount with blue and red enamel still remaining even after centuries buried in the soil.

The setting i use on the Minelab Safari were all metal, auto sensitivity, -10 and +40 notched out, threshold just audible and a good noise cancel. I found these settings to be very effective and worked quite deep. On the whole i am very impressed with the detector so far although it is a touch on the heavy side and my arm is feeling it right now.

Here is the video of the action

Also here is a picture of the mount!

Beginners guide to getting metal detecting permissions in the UK and abroad

This morning i received a comment on this blog which i will quote below.

"Could you discuss how to get permissions U started metal detecting after watching your videos and i have a permit for beaches river banks etc but have not been able to secure any land its quite frustrating can you help thanks Richard "

This is something that is asked so many times on all the metal detecting forums and blogs that i read

The new metal detector is here and some channel updates!

Well I raced home from work today in anticipation that the postman had delivered me a parcel, I was not disappointed.
After carefully unwrapping the well sealed up box my shiny new (used) Minelab Safari for sat on my lap waiting for assembly. This is my first ever Minelab machine and I am really happy with

I am very excited for tomorrow! (new metal detector alert)

Andy joins the Minelab Brigade

The day has come..... I could no longer handle not having a metal detector that I could use on the land. It was back in the cold and gloomy month of February since I last swung a coil in anger and it has really took its toll now. I bought a Cscope cs4pi around May time to do a bit of beach detecting but unfortunately the East Yorkshire beaches have been so sanded in that it is not worth the fuel to travel to the nearest

Which metal detector is the best to buy?

Which metal detector is the best?!

This is a question I am regularly asked in the comment sections of my metal detecting YouTube channel and it is possibly the hardest question to answer that is asked so often by newcomers to the hobby. You see, there are so many different variables involved

A few metal detecting bits and bobs, Stout Standards and a Viking sword!

Bronze Age sword found by the river and left in a barn for 50 years!

Ok, granted this is not a metal detecting find but it is a very extraordinary find so it has made it onto this blog post.

In 1965 Ambrose Owens was fishing on the river bank in County Fermanagh when he spotted an interesting looking sword,

How to beach metal detect -part 2- locating the treasure!

I have been metal detecting on the beach and all I found is ring pulls, what am I doing wrong?

This has got to be the main question successful beach metal detectorists get asked by people who are just getting into the hobby, hell, I asked the same question myself a few times at the start of my journey! By the end of this post hopefully some of you will be finding more 22ct rings instead of the coca-cola variety.
There are a few reasons as to why you are only finding ring pulls

Andy Baines is back in the metal detecting and magnet fishing game!

Why have I not been metal detecting, making videos or blogging?!

The simple answer is I have been struggling with the motivation to do anything

A metal detecting adventure with Pompom the dog.

Hey everyone.

So today I told the Mrs I would take the dog for a long walk but I also wanted to go metal detecting as well. A local permission that I have is part of the area that I like to take the dog for a walk but unfortunately the crops are in full swing so its off limits. However recently the farmer has been dredging

My best magnet fishing trip yet!

Hi all,
So yesterday I woke up to abysmal weather, the rain was lashing down and the cold wind was howling. To be honest I had already written the day off for treasure hunting due to the weather, however by

Metal detecting UK, return to bomb beach after Deep Digger Dan's visit.

Hi all,

Last year I made a video special to highlight the dangers faced at some of the East Yorkshire beaches here in the UK. This beach in particular was used for bombing practice by the MOD for a large number of years.

In 1998 the MOD stopped using the range for it bombing practices but

I just found a BOMB metal detecting with my Deteknix Quest Pro.

Today I was up and awake bright and early ready to get out on the field for the first time with the new Deteknix Quest Pro metal detector. This was to be its maiden voyage and I had already decided that I would head to my pasture permission as I wanted to see how deep it could pull finds from.

Upon arrival there was a chilly breeze but the sun was out and shining and was pleasantly warm on my face

New Deteknix Quest Pro metal detector review.

Deteknix Quest Pro metal detector review.

Hi all it has been quite some time since I last put up a blog post, today though i have something to write about!

Last Monday whilst I was at work the postman dropped off a very special package to my house, one that I had been waiting for a while. Unfortunately though whilst servicing my car the day before I managed to spill some engine coolant on my hands which a had quite an epic allergic reaction too. This caused me have some

DIY home made pulse induction metal detector surf 1.2 pi.

So a couple of years ago I started a project to build my own pi metal detector. I bought a silverdog surf 1.2 pi kit and had every intention to complete it!

Well unfortunately my soldering and electrical skills back the. Were near non existent and so the project got stuffed into a box and forgotten about.
Today though I found it whilst emptying one of our moving boxes. I have been wanting to get a pi detector for a while now so I can start beach detecting again but cash is a bit tight right now so buying a detector is out of the question.
The though that maybe I could revive the project and save myself a few quid crossed my mind and I set about resoldering all the connections and rolling a temporary coil, batteries were added and I tried firing it into life.
It works! The beast is alive. I was so buzzing I have made a short video to show it off. Hope you enjoy it and I will update when I build the full coil and housings :)

Happy hunting!

Two great metal detecting sessions with the new camera.

Hi all, I hope you all had a great Christmas and didn't get to fat :)

I was a lucky boy this Christmas, my wonderful Mrs bought me a new action camera for better recording of my metal detecting sessions. This camera
