I'm not going to beat around the bush with this one, I don't like it one bit.
Sometime in the coming month or so there will be a new metal detecting TV series horribly named "Nazi war diggers". The programme will be focusing on two UK metal detectorists and a collector who have travelled to eastern Europe searching on grounds that staged a vicious war and left millions dead.
What could they possibly gain by digging up and tampering with the bodies of fallen soldiers? Well the answer to that can be found on the nat geo website.
"Their quest- to hunt for relics and bodies. "
Its sickening and barbaric, these soldiers died defending their people and country! How on Earth could anyone for one second think about digging them up to swipe any relics that they may have.
That is not the worst of it either, lets have a quote from Craig Gottlieb, taken from his biog on the nat geo site.
"I feel that by selling things that are Nazi related and for lots of money, I’m preserving a part of history that museums don’t want to bother with”
So there we have it, cold hard cash is what it takes this man to trash someone's grave. This is just televised grave robbing of the highest order.
I have no doubt that most of the public who watch it will find it thrilling and exciting as I bet the production team have filled it with dramatic music and suspense but as a metal detectorists with some morals I wont be viewing it. I really hope it doesn't have a negative knock-on effect on this hobby but I fail to see how it cannot.
The two detectorists are members of the metal detecting forum I use frequently, I have no doubt there will be some dim views of this blog post by some forum members there. However if I see something I don't like I will open my mouth and say something, and in this case something needed to be said.
What ever happened to Rest In Peace?!
